Newborn Sessions Explained | Cornwall & Ottawa Area Photographer

Recently there has been a increase in newborn session inquiries…maybe it’s the little extra time some may have during the winter season?? What ever the case, the #1 question I am asked about newborn sessions is…”What is the difference between a in home or studio session?”

Today’s blog feature is the help educate potential clients on how to make the decision between these two styles! It really comes down to personal choice & what style of images that attract you!! The reason this is SO important is the resulting images from each session will be completely different!!

I am going to start with a studio session…these sessions are very time sensitive!! I can’t stress enough to clients how time sensitive these are….the most successful studio newborn sessions are scheduled 7 to 12 days after birth! Baby is still flexible, loves to be swaddled, is comfortable being in small spaces & tends to sleep soundly at this age. In home sessions can be schedule 7days after birth or up to 4 weeks after they arrive!

The biggest advantage to a studio session is not having to be concerned about the appearance of your home! Many clients are either in the process of renovating their home, just moved, haven’t finished the nursery yet or consider their home too messy!! Having a studio session is perfect for them, as there is no worries about having to tidy any spaces!

Consistent lighting throughout your finished gallery is another benefit of a studio session! Studio lights are used for these sessions & once the original test image is taken….every image after stays consistent! As for in home sessions, depending on the weather may change numerous times during your session.

Another huge benefit is all the props, wraps, bonnets & tiebacks are available to use or change throughout our session! I do have four setups chosen & put together before clients arrive, these setups are chosen with the help of some answers from the session questionnaire! I try to take into consideration the colours of the nursery, any particular images the clients loved from the site & even some special requests.

If a client would like to change out any of the colours, that is easily done during a studio session! There is a selection of colours available to chosen from!

Images that are produced from a studio session, are very posed, curated & use props with wraps, bonnets & tiebacks. Clients are guided through all the posing combinations during our session….the resulting images will look completely different than finished images from a in home session.

In home sessions are a favourite of mine too!! There is a different feel to these sessions, a feeling of comfort, calmness & a personal experience especially for us the viewer! As these images not only showcase your newborn but your home, where your family will live & grow together!

When clients contact me about a newborn session with siblings, especially young siblings…I always highly recommend a in home session! Children are much more relaxed in a familiar setting, they have their toys, snacks & even can stay on their nap schedule during in home sessions!

These sessions are a excellent way to incorporate your furry family members!! Cats especially…they just can’t help themselves & need to check out what I am up too!!

A in home session also decreases the number of germs your newborn is exposed to…their immune system is very fragile!! While I do my upmost best to keep my home & studio clean…there are 6 children that live in this house! The studio is cleaned & disinfected prior to any newborn session…plus any sessions are rescheduled if myself or any of my children are unwell.

Don’t like your outfit or would like to change out of an outfit after your images are done during a in home session? Changing your outfit or into more comfortable clothing is super easy when you have a in home session! Clients also don’t have to worry about forgetting to pack anything in their diaper bag…it’s all right there!! Baby spit up?? No worries, you are able to quickly change them!!

Images produced from a in home session will have a more causal, relaxed & showcase a more lifestyle look compared to studio images! Your newborn doesn’t have to be asleep for this session, your images are more based on connection than perfection!

From my personal experience, the biggest drawback for clients about a in home session?? They are worried their home isn’t perfectly clean or not exactly how they would like for it to look! For a in home session, I always let my clients know that we will be using 1 or 2 rooms in their home…usually the nursery, living room or master bedroom. This way, they only need to focus on keeping two rooms tidy!

Another tip I mention is most images will be done beside a window…keeping the light perfect on them, allows the background to become black & messes disappear!

I assure clients that I have seen it all!! Having the number of children we do, our home is usually a little up ended & you just had a baby….no one is expecting perfection!!

Now that you have some more information about the differences & benefits about each session type, I hope this helps clients to make a choice for their perfect newborn session!
